Falling in month of Phalgun which is usually time period between February and March, Holi is a marking of harvest season following spring.
The root of the festival go all the way to Puranic century where there was an evil kind called Hiranyakashipu. His ego and demonic nature was the reason of pains and tribulations of the people not only of his kingdom but also the rest of the world. The rescuer came in form of his own son Prahlada who was intense worshipper of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu plotted to get rid of his son with help of his sister Holika who was blessed to withstand fire. But to their surprise and ill Prahlada came out unhurt from the fire he was put to die while Holika was reduced to ashes.
This is why Holika Dahan is celebrated a day before Holi to burn all the evil. Also Holi is not only about the win of good over evil but also the celebration of Raasleela. The divine love and association of Lord Krishna with gopis is called Raasleela. Pictures below depict Raasleela the best.
